Week 15: Wikis

This is my favorite week. I think the best was saved until last! I've been wanting to create information on a wiki, but had not known exactly how to do it. After looking at a number of wikis, I decided to add some information to Wikipedia about one of my ancestors, Humphrey Tiffany. Here is where that information can be found. The web address is "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiffany."

As he was the first Tiffany in Massachusetts, I was able to add him to the Tiffany article on Wikipedia along with other famous other people named Tiffany. Included in this list was Louis Comfort Tiffany, the stained glass artist, as well as Charles Louis Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co. I have now been able to boast in jest to some of my co-workers that I have published material to my credit:)

Now that I have added a line about Humphrey Tiffany, I see that I can create a whole page about him. This has been so much fun! It makes some of the more difficult weeks of 23thingsKansas worth the effort.

Week 14: Library Thing, Etc.

I was pleased to be introduced to Shelfari this week. Although I had used Library Thing previously, I liked the visual appearance and reviews of Shelfari. If only I had not inadvertently accessed a co-worker's account!

I have added a review for Resilience by Elizabeth Edwards. Her book is helping me deal with a challenging situation as she stresses the importance of moving on with life.

I also have listed Tinsel as a book I want to read. It was suggested by another co-worker and sounds like a interesting novel that may make me consider how the different ways we choose to celebrate Christmas in this country. I like the fact that it is set in Texas as that state has some fascinating citizens who know how to put on a show.

Week 13: Slide Sharing

With the help of Diana, my technological library buddy, I have uploaded a library safety power point presentation (http://www.slideshare.net/debbyw/library20-safety20and20-security1) to Slideshare. It was aimed at library staff members and was presented at a Leavenworth Public Library staff meeting by Diana and Kim Baker, our library director. Now I will be prepared to use this site for any power point presentations that I create in the future.

Week 12: Screencasting

I have not yet been successful in bringing up Screencast-o-matic. Should this situation change, I'll be pleased to demonstrate how to locate an index to our Kansas vertical file material.

Well, it's a new day! Cynthia and Diana, my buddies, have helped me prepare a screencast using Jing: http://screencast.com/t/NjllOTZmMTIt. Happily, Cynthia has placed a link to it on the Leavenworth Public Library's website (http://www.leavenworthpubliclibrary.org/Reference/history_genealogy.html) for the world to view.

Week Ten: Video on the Web

I have chosen a video about Leavenworth from YouTube: . It is a news report on KMBC TV in Kansas City, "Hittin' the Road: Leavenworth" that aired a couple of years ago. I think this report is great in letting people know about the history of Leavenworth and what they can do here when visiting.

Week Nine: Instant Messaging

As our reference desk already had a Yahoo instant messaging account, I continued to use it.

When I went into meebo, I was surprised to see an account for someone I did not recognize. So, I sent a message asking who that person was. Happily, one of our librarians let me know that it was for another of our staff members!

For the time being, I'll continue to use our account that has as its login "refwork."

Week Eight: Cloud Computing

Using Google Documents, I shared the banned books document, "Forbidden Books," with several 23 Things Kansas participants. While this was an interesting exercise, I have some reservations about sharing any documents that contain personal information.

Week Seven: Microblogging

I am now following 23thingsks, van2010games, and SaintsNews on Twitter using debbyhw as my Twitter handle. I find it challenging to think of tweets to post but I have enjoyed following Iran during its election.

Week Six: Tagging and Social Bookmarking

I enjoyed viewing some of the websites that other people had tagged using delicious. As our library will be using KOHA on Nexpress, I searched for information on KOHA. I had fun seeing what some other people had chosen.

Nelsonville Public Library in Athens County, Ohio was shown by two different social bloggers. Clicking on their names revealed quite a difference in their interests. Stillpoint had also chosen Mannahatta, a site that provides information about New York City in 1609. Stephenzone had a link to Tonganoxie Public Library. What a small world!

Week Five: RSS and Feed Readers

I decided to use Bloglines as there was a good deal of information about it in the instructions. Once I set up an account, I chose to view the feeds of Abstract Art, Dictionary.com Word of the Day, New York Times home page, PC Magazine, Remembrances on NPR, Rotten Tomatoes, and Salon.

Week Four: Photo Sharing

Having chosen this photo, you may be able to tell that I am more than ready for spring! I hope the groundhog feels the same way.

Week Three: Online Meetings

I viewed a portion of Brenda Hough's webinar on Wimba, "Introduction to the Kansas Creativity Group Archive." I found it to be interesting. It is somewhat frustrating, however, to see the message that the Java that is on the computers at Leavenworth Public Library is a newer version than the one that is running.

The webinars that I choose to view are the ones in which I have a great interest. It helps when I have the time to be able to view them away from the Reference Desk. I am motivated to be able to see a demo through a webinar of a new piece of software, such as Illuminar.

Week Two: Online Communities

As I already had a Facebook page, I asked a couple of 23 Things Kansas participants who I had not friended to be my friends for this exercise. I'm hoping to share my online experiences with them. I enjoy using Facebook to keep in contact with friends and family around the country. I did link my blog to it. I like the way we can connect our various online pages.

Week One: Blogging

My name is Debby Williamson and I am a reference librarian at Leavenworth Public Library. I am interested in learning about the newer technological tools. This way I can use them here at work, particularly with our younger patrons.

I'm pleased to have been able to complete the establishment of my blog! It worked just as you demonstrated. At first, however. I forgot what my url was. So, I'm going to try to remember to write all of this information down! I'm also interested in learning about the other participants and the 22 things yet to come.
